Big game sportfishing is a hunt!  The captain uses the bridge as the "high-ground" to watch for, or "spot" signs of action.  Some species of birds will indicate that fish may be below the surface.  Frigate birds are an example.  Baitfish jumping and schooling at the surface could be a sign of a predator fish below.  We encourage your participation in searching for these signs.  Watching the water for signs such as birds, jumping fish or dorsal fins and tails at the surface are important to point out to the crew.  Teamwork can lead to better results!

Captains will use trolling methods to cover a large area.  Artificial baits or lures are trolled at varying speeds and distances behind the boat to entice a fish to strike.

Occasionally, a billfish will "raise" into the pattern of trolled lures and our crew will pitch a live bait out to entice the fish to bite.
